Overview
Helping CFN is not complicated or time-consuming.
With a few brief visits to our site, your talents can become an immense humanitarian contribution.
It’s as easy as Learn, Add, Review.
Learn more about the devastating impact of the diseases we are targeting on our List of Diseases. Within our Wiki database is background information about the disease, the drug used to treat it, and synthetic routes used for drug synthesis on the target drug pages.
Add your own novel drug synthesis routes, developing them with ChemSketch, Marvin, or similar chemical structure drawing program. Whether it’s an entirely new route or a simple deviation to current syntheses, any change that can make drug development costs cheaper are welcome. Simply post using the Drug Synthesis Submission Form.
Review posted syntheses from other users and help validate new synthetic routes. If you’re having trouble thinking of your own novel synthesis, put in your two cents on someone else’s. All syntheses will be posted and available for editing on the individual drug’s Wiki page. Contribute to our Forums as well.

Note
This website looks best in the Firefox 3.0.12 browser, but compatibility view on IE 8 should fix any graphical issues.
Registering
If you would like to contribute to this project (by suggesting other diseases/drugs, improving synthetic pathways to the listed drugs, or discussing other issues at hand), we encourage you to set up an account. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Click the “Log in/create account” link located in the top left-hand corner of the page.
2. Enter the appropriate information into the fields (Note: some information is optional)
3. Click “Create Account”
In the future, you will need to log in (with username and password) in order to access the full site and edit or add information, including syntheses.
Editing/Adding Information
Once logged-in, you will be able to edit and add information to the site. This can be done by accessing the page of interest and clicking “edit” from the set of links located at the bottom of the page or at the section headers. Save the changes in accordance with the instructions given at the bottom of the new editable page. Note that all changes are archived in the page’s history and can be viewed by clicking the appropriate “history” link. Each page also has a discussion forum where the page’s content can be discussed with other users. For other specific questions regarding the editing process see FAQ or Contact Us.
Drawing Molecules/Syntheses
Unfortunately, Cure for Needy is unable to host a chemical structure drawing tool on the website at this time. However, we have compiled a list of sites that offer free drawing programs, listed below and on our Links page. Download one of the following for free or purchase one for use in drawing your syntheses.
Marvin
FREE chemical structure drawing software (Windows, Linux, Mac compatible)
ChemSketch
FREE chemical structure drawing software (Windows and Linux only)
JchemPaint
FREE Java applet for viewing and drawing chemical structures; Compatible with all computers but not as powerful as other software
ChemDraw
Free limited trial version or purchase of entire program
Submitting a Synthesis
When you are ready to propose a synthesis, go the the Drug Synthesis Submission Form. On the first page, enter the title of your synthesis into the box and press the 'Add or Edit' button.
On the next page, enter your name in the Author field and select the drug you are proposing a synthesis for from the dropdown menu. These two actions will insure that you receive credit for your work and that your synthesis appears on the right page.
In the text field, you may upload your synthesis as a png, gif, jpg, jpeg, pdf, ppt, zip, jar, class, svg, or swf. To do so, type [[Image:mysynthesis.jpg]] into the box, but replace mysynthesis.jpg with the destination name of your file and its specific type. The maximum file size is 2 MB. You may also type text directly if you prefer, but you must follow this protocol to add a picture.
When you have finished writing in the text box and filling out the other fields, click ‘Save Page’. You will then be taken to your synthesis page.
If you added an image, you must now upload the actual file to the site. Click on the red link that says ‘Image:mysynthesis.jpg’ and you will be taken to a page where you can upload your picture. Browse through your computer contents to find the source file and then click ‘Upload file’. Note: The destination file name can be different than the source name, but the file extensions (jpg, gif, et cetera) must match up. You have now finished submitting your synthesis!
Critiquing a Synthesis
To critique a submitted synthesis, click on the Discussion button at the bottom of that synthesis' page. There you can add your comments and upload files that show revisions if necessary. Please add a signature with timestamp to the end of each comment so comments will be separated and people can give credit where it is due. The signature button is the second one from the left on the row of buttons on each editing page.
Forum
A general discussion forum is also provided for topics other than those addressed on the specific disease and drug pages (for example: how to distribute the drugs to those in need, how to increase awareness of the neglected tropical diseases and orphan drugs, etc.). We also have a forum for site improvements, or you can Contact Us directly. Please get involved - we'd love to have your input.
