Frequently Asked Questions
How do I register/create an account?
Please visit "Registering" under Instructions or click on the Log in/Create Account button at the top of the page.
What are the benefits of registering?
After registering at Cure for Needy, you will be able to give much needed aid in finding cost-effective and efficient syntheses of our featured chemicals. Also, with registration, you are able to comment on and improve the proposed syntheses of other Cure for Needy members. This aid is essential in finding new ways to ease the monetary barriers preventing treatments and orphan drugs from getting to the people who need them most.
I forgot my password. What do I do?
Click on the Login/Create Account button at the top of the screen and enter your username. Then click the "Email new password" button. A new, temporary password will be emailed to the account registered with your username which will allow you to log in. When you log in with the temporary password you will first be prompted to reset your password before you can access the site.
What qualifications are necessary to participate?
In order to propose cost-effective and efficient syntheses of these chemicals, expertise in synthetic chemistry is necessary. However, non-chemists can contribute in ways other than submitting syntheses (see question below).
How can I contribute if I am not a synthetic chemist?
In addition to proposing syntheses, another goal of Cure for Needy is to increase awareness of the tropical neglected diseases and diseases treated by orphan drugs. If you would like to contribute to the publicity of our cause or help improve the site, please feel free to start editing or Contact Us with larger suggestions. Also, join with others in discussing ways to help related projects on our discussion page.
Where do I post my syntheses? How and where will they be stored?
After filling out and clicking 'Save Page' on the Drug Synthesis Submission Form, the data you entered will be compiled onto a new page of the website. It is accessible by going to the page of your target drug and clicking the link to your synthesis under 'Submitted Syntheses'. You may also go to it by replacing 'pagename' with the name you provided for your synthesis on the first page of the form in the following URL: http://www.cureforneedy.org/wiki/pagename
How is my intellectual property protected?
When you post something on the Cure for Needy Site, you agree to publish it under the Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/) which is as follows:
"This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use."
How will my synthesis/idea be used or tested? By whom?
As under the Creative Commons License, others may "remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms."
However, if a pharmaceutical company has patent rights to the production of the molecule, no one else may produce the molecule without obtaining permission from that company. If you wish to test out a synthesis for future production, you must obtain permission from the pharmaceutical company. You may utilize our Forums for these efforts after first checking production rights.
How can I suggest new drugs or chemicals for synthesis?
Under Discussion, there are forums in which to collaborate and think of new targets.
Where can I find more information about these diseases?
There are descriptions and links on each disease page. Please go to the List of Diseases or Links page.
