Amebiasis
Background
Amebiasis is caused by a protozoan parasite often found in areas of poor sanitation. This is a very widespread disease - it is estimated that 50% of the people in Mexico, South America, India, West Africa, and South Africa are affected by this disease. Transmitted by ingestion of the parasite, which can live in a person's large intestine without causing any symptoms, amebiasis can cause bloody diarrhea, stomach pains, loss of appetite, fever and cramping. In extreme cases, the parasite can spread to other organs such as the liver, lungs, and brain.
